# BMW VINs at a glance

BMW VINs always begin with one of: **WBA, WBS, WBY, WBX, 5UX, 5UM, 5YM, 4US, 4USB**.

These three characters are the WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) — they tell you which factory in the BMW Group built the car. The next six characters are the VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section), which encode chassis, body, engine, and restraint system. The final eight are the VIS (Vehicle Identifier Section): a check digit (position 9), model year letter (position 10), plant code (position 11), and a six-digit production sequence.
